Last year I did a TFT post on Benign Neglect and bored kids... take a look if you want.
Anyhow... Half Full had a post today about kids' play and academic success. Can I tell you how "happy" these snippets made me:
- Child-led, unstructured play (with or without adults) leads to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional well-being.
- It is perfectly fine for parents to back-off a little bit and let children play on their own or with other children, especially once they are 4 or 5 years old. Kids learn how to entertain themselves this way, and how to get along with other children.
- Make sure that kids have enough time: a half hour is the minimum. Play that lasts several hours is better
- And it turns out that sacrificing play to earlier academics and earlier sports does not necessarily lead to greater success, and might even hinder it.
Love, love, love it! I agree with a lot of what she said. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with you. Good topic!
ReplyDeleteGreat post.... thanks for sharing!!!! Kids grow up way to fast.. the time for school (academics) and work comes in time... no need to force it. Let kids BE kids...
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting! I'm a big believer in a lot of these concepts! My kid is at a home daycare for a lot of these reasons, she is learning how to entertain herself and develop her imagination.
