Names names names...

Why is it so hard to name a baby??   The boys seemed so easy.  Porter we pretty much knew we'd name him Porter.   We took awhile to officially settle on the name only because we were afraid it was too "different".   Hudson was a runner up for Porter, so when we were having Hudson we pretty much knew we'd go with Hudson, but again... there was about a month of debating other names. But... Hudson always was the go-to.

Amelia... she wasn't named until she was born.  Although... I guess I kind of knew that's what we'd settle on only because it was the only name we could agree on.  I really was pushing for Norah but Ryan said no.  So, when Amelia was born he looked at me and said "So... is it Amelia?" And I could tell he really wanted it to be Amelia so that's what she was.

And this baby... well... I have no clue.  I still like Norah but maybe not AS much as I did when Amelia was born.  And Ryan isn't a huge fan.  I have a list of names I've kind of narrowed my ideas down to, but... we'll see.

Here's the things I keep thinking of.

Porter Evan  (2 syllable, 2 syllable)
Hudson Riley  (2 syllable, 2 syllable)
Amelia Jane  (4 syllable, 1 syllable)

... all have 6 letter first names.  I really liked Norah Lucille for Amelia because it'd fulfill the 2 syllable, 2 syllable (though not 6 letters!)... but alas, we went with Amelia.  So.  I think... we could go with a 4 syllable girl name, or a 6 letter girl name.  I really don't want to do a P or an H because sometimes when I write lists/notes/texts etc I use "P" or "H" or "AJ" for the kids.  So... if we had another P or H it would mess that up.  I also don't really want a name that can be shortened naturally to a nickname (like.. Madison/Maddy, Kimberly/Kim, Abigail/Abby etc).  I'm weird.  I know.   HAHA!

So... here is a list of names.   Some are names that are seriously on "my" list.  Some are names that I'm going to throw out there to just add in :)  I'm not sure if we'll tell her name until after she's born so... we'll see.

Norah
Ellery
Eloise
Hazel
Charlotte
Aria
Violet
Mallory
Elodie
Melody
Alice
Cora
Kathleen
Eden

let's talk nicknames

I always find it funny how kids get nicknames.... I know some people specifically pick out their kids' nicknames and that's what they call them.   Us, however, we've somehow ended up with very random, off the wall nicknames for our kids.

PORTER....
He goes by Poe quite often (and even requested in school to be called Poe... I was shocked when I went in to his class to help out and everyone was referring to him as Poe!) When he was littler we called him P-Man but that didn't stick for much longer than his baby years.   He doesn't have too odd of nicknames, but we do call him things like Duder, Poe-Sniggety, Poe-Ev,  Poe-D.... uhmmm... that's about it.

HUDSON...
This boy has quite the slew of random nicknames. Bess is the most common... Bess and Bessie.  It started when he was a baby and Porter started calling him Hudson Bessie out of the blue.  And it stuck!  So, don't be surprised if you hear us call "Hey Bess!"  or "Bessie come here!"   It just is natural... but soo soo odd.  We also call him Bessie Boo, BesserNater, Snugger, Snugmeister, Sugar Bear

AMELIA
Her most common nickname is AJ by family members, but we also have somehow given her the nickname Tee or Tee-Tee.  The only thing I can think of is that it morphed from Sissy (Sissy --> Tissy --> Tiss Tiss --> Tee Tee).  Tee/Tee-Tee has turned in to Teeter Totter.  I kid you not.  We call our baby girl Teeter Totter.  AmerJamer (AymerJaymer) and AJ Bada BayJay is another.  Ry calls her Smunchkin.  Sissy and Sissy Boo or Sis are pretty common as well.  When I was pregnant I'd wanted to have her nickname be Mela/Mila (mee-lah) or Meels or Meelie.  But... that hasn't sprouted out yet.  Maybe once she's gets a little older?  We didn't start calling Porter Poe until he was 3 or so.   We shall see!

So... what are your kids' nicknames?

Teeth, Sports, Careers and Babies

-Porter lost his 2nd tooth last night.  It'd been wiggly for a few weeks and Oma had told Porter the other day that if he pulled his tooth out before Saturday's Christmas she'd give him $2.  Last night he asked me, out of the blue, "Mom, do you want me to pull my tooth out?"  I said I didn't care (because, really??) and he walked into the kitchen, got a towel, came back into the living room and pulled that baby out in a second and said "Oops, there it is! I pulled it out!"  So random.  HAHA! Not sure if he was motivated more by the money promised by Oma or that he wanted to pull his 2nd tooth out before Aubri pulled hers out.

-Porter started basketball on Thursday.  It should be interesting... they had one practice (Thurs) and have a game next Saturday.  As usual, Porter was the only kid on his team (there are 6 kids) that was dinking around with his shorts, hands in his pocket, hopping and spinning around while the coach was instructing them on drills.   He said it was boring because he didn't get to play... but doesn't get that he has to LEARN how to play in order to PLAY.  Duh.  The child has no attention, I swear.   So... we're holding him to playing this season (just until the end of Feb) because he is the one that initiated that he wanted to play basketball and the money is paid already.  I hope that he enjoys it after they start playing games.

-I decided to drop my Master's classes.  I am taking a different direction (approach, mindset etc..) and just getting my 18 credits in a planned program to move onto my professional license.  The past few months I've become more at peace with where I am at with my work/career path at this time.  The bottom line was that I'm not sure when I'll be fulltime and I don't want to spend the next 4 years busting my butt to get my Masters degree and have it possibly over-qualify me and hold me back from getting hired in full time.  College will be there later.  Masters degrees will be there later.  One on one days with the kids?  They're limited.  And I'm so glad I have made that discovery now rather than later.  My kids are only little for such a short period of time and I want to try to focus on them and not so much on building a career.  Sure, I'd love to be teaching full time but I also know that that would mean less time with my kids (no Friday-Mom-Days, more time planning at home etc) and right now I'm okay with not being full time.  I'm okay with putting the extra time into the boys (and soon baby sis) and viewing it as a blessing rather than a setback.  Sure, it may mean a few more years of doing photography more than I'd like, and it may mean driving my rusty but paid-off van instead of getting something shiny and new but I am choosing to be thankful for my Fridays with Hudson right now and thankful that I have been blessed with photography skills and a prosperous part time business that helps fill in the gaps when we need it to.

-Baby Sis (as we've come to call her) still does not have a name.  We have a few top contenders (and really, though, Ryan is pretty set on one name) but I'm not 100%.  I don't have an absolute favorite, but feel pulled by one in particular.  I don't know.  Regardless, we've decided to keep her name to ourselves until she is born.  Even if we decide I feel that this time I need to SEE her to be settled on her name.

Her room is coming along nicely!  Her walls are a light light spring green (very pale yellow/green).  New curtain rods have been hung and the curtains have been made (by me!) and hung.  We purchased a dresser at a resale shop and it was a pale yellow (which was pretty in itself but it clashed with the wall color) and I repainted it pink and distressed it so the yellow shows through in spots.  It is beautiful.  I love love love it.  I've attempted to work on her quilt today but only got so far as to cut out the 5" squares.  My sewing machine has taken a dump on me.  So, hopefully I'll get some progress done on that soon!  I still need a rug for her room though I kind of want to get the bedding done first to see if I need color or something neutral.  I wanted to do pink, but now that I have the curtains up I am leaning towards wanting something shaggy and cream/white colored.  We'll see.

The Baby Train

Last weekend we had dinner with the Huffs.... their oldest two (Donnie and Nolan) are the exact same age as Porter and Hudson (being 6 and 2 weeks older than my boys, respectively).  Poor little Adrian, he's left without a partner in crime to grow up with and they (although mainly Don and Ryan) decided to gang up on me and try to convince me I needed to hop on the Baby Train and add Baby Barczak #3 to our family.

My response..... Hell. To. The. No.

Ryan has been bugging me since Hudson's 1st birthday to have another baby.  Seriously!  He was this way when Porter was about a year old and it took him 6 months to convince me to have another baby.  So far we're nearing a year and a half for Baby #3 and I promise it will be longer than that.  Sure, the idea of another baby sounds so precious and sweet, but I can easily count the number of times I've been annoyed with the multitude of responsibility having to do with the family/house etc that falls solely on my shoulders and I realize I'd be batshit crazy to add another responsibility to the plate.

Sure, I want another baby.  Maybe even two.... (most definitely not at the same time, though).  But the boys are JUST starting to get easier.... they're just starting to get to where they aren't making me feel like I could gouge my eyeballs out with a spoon 15 times a day.  I think I want to wallow in that feeling of love for my kids.  And I have.... it seems like the past week I've had so many reminders, nudges, if you will... that the boys are growing up so fast.  My babies are growing up so fast!  And I am trying to stop and really take in the little guys they have become.

One of my favorite times of the day (as it always has been) has been bedtime.  I try to have special Mommy/Hudson and Mommy/Porter time before bed.  Usually Hudson gets me first since he doesn't quite possess the patience that a 4 year old has (if that is saying anything).  We read a story and then he tells me "Lay down me, Mama"  meaning... he wants me to lay down with him and snuggle.  So I lay down with him and we talk about his day and he has such sweet little conversations.  And I do these same things with Porter, only our conversations sometimes get a little deeper.  I love these quiet times where I can really see what a sensitive kid Porter is, and really kind of pick his brain when we have nothing else we're juggling at that moment.

For now, we remain a 2 child family.  There will be more babies, yes.  But not right now... not while I'm really enjoying the two monkeys I have.

I do, however, always think of baby names.  I've done this since I was a child and I still love love love names.  I love discussing names and hearing what other people are naming their kids and contemplating what names would fit into our family for our future children.  Before we had kids, Ryan and I used to talk about baby names on our way up to Silver Lake (back when we took many trips a summer).  Of course I have a list still.... a list waiting for Baby #3.  And we can discuss it now, because that would be fun.  And it will be neat to look back on when Baby #3 does enter our family.

Let's start with Boy names.... because, well, just because. It is shorter, I'll say.
Finley..... my grandpa's name.  Its becoming a little more mainstream, which is good and bad.  It is definitely high on my list, though because uhm, Porter, Hudson and Finley sound like darling little brothers!!
Gray
Gibson- prob would never use because HudSON and GibSON.
Rowan
Sullivan
Jude-  I also loove love love Jude.  My grandma is Judy, and I think Jude would be a perfect namesake.

And girls names.... a much, much longer list as I haven't had the pleasure of using any of these yet.
Cora
Brynn- I love Brynn, but don't love Brynn Barczak
Avery
Rowan- Love it, although its almost too unisex for my boys' names.
Aria- I love Aria, too.  I babysat an Aria for quite a few years.  Spunky little girly.
Mira - This has been on my list awhile.  Love that its different.
Selah-  This has been on my list awhile, as well.
Hazel- this is my absolute favorite.  I can see a fair skinned, little brown haired, freckle faced girl with greenish grey eyes named Hazel.  And isn't Porter, Hudson and Hazel just so sweet?
Harlow
 -  Isn't this Nicole Ritchie's daughter or something? Almost too unisex with the boys' names, and I'm not sure about HARlow BARczak.
Amelia- Another favorite.
Charlotte- And another favorite, although again I'm not sure about CHARlotte BARczak
Harper- I like Harper but probably would never use because PortER and HarpER.  Yes, I'm weird like that.

Let's play a game! A baby name game!

I love names. Baby names. (no... I am not pregnant nor will be anytime in the near future) I've always loved thinking up names that work well together for siblings. I love contemplating names for future additions to our family or even more so, friends families.

Right now there seem to be so many people I know that are pregnant! Leslie, LeeAnn, Kim, Kasey, Maria, Carrie, Ashley S., Jessica, Ashley M., along with a couple other friends who I can't link to as they don't have blogs or websites :)

I always love to hear what names people are thinking about and get so excited when people share them! Of course all this name talk has me thinking "What would we name our 3rd child? What boy name would go with Porter and Hudson? What girl name would go well with their names?"

So... I thought it would be fun to play a little name game! I've listed a slew of sibling sets of friends (most bloggers but some IRL friends) and I want you to come up with a boy and a girl name for a sibling for them! It should be interesting to see what names everyone things will "go" together! (Need a little help or some ideas? Nymbler.com is a great site.... it helps choose names that have similar characteristics or origins)

Now... the hardest for me is my own kids! I tend to lean towards more old fashioned but making a comeback as trendy type names... I want something different and unusual but not necessarily "out there" or "made up" or "spelled weird". I will put a disclaimer out there that my husband may or may not agree with any or all of these names.

For girls, I like Amelia, Hazel, Elsie, Charlotte, Selah, Ellery. Kind of funny... Hazel and Elsie are both names of aunts on Ryan's side. Hazel was a wrapping paper pack rat and Elsie is known as the toenail clipper aunt by my friends (when she passed she had a garage full of BOXES of items from auction... and Ryan brought home a box of like 50 nail clippers... which he made everyone who came to our house take a pair home LOL!). I also had a great grandma Hazel on my side.

Boys are harder. I like more of the "last name first" type of name.... a little Old English style, I guess you'd say? Some of my favorites are Sullivan, Gibson and Rowan. Ok, so not that many. I have a hang up with boy names... I really don't want any that end in "son" or "er" like Porter and Hudson. Which nixes lots of cute boy names that would fit my "last name first" and "Old English" style category.
