The boys and I spent the morning/noon at The Treehouse with Katie, Nicki and their kids. We were talking about how addictive Facebook has gotten... how we check it constantly and find ourselves consumed with other peoples lives that we otherwise could care less about talking to/hanging out with in real life. We made a pact to take a week long Face-Cation. A break from the chatter, the updates, the statuses, the drama, the nitpicking, the mindless information from everyone and anyone.
I have been so unmotivated to blog anymore, and I think a lot of it is because of Facebook. Let's face it... it is a lot easier/quicker to post an update to Facebook than to get on the blog and blog it. And the feedback is quicker. But... its not archival and that is the whole reason I blog.
I'm actually thinking of seriously weeding out people on my friends list to only the people I actually speak to/email in person. Only the people I truly care about what is in their statuses. Although... I know that will hurt a lot of feelings and I'm not sure how to go about that. There are "acquaintances" that I have on Facebook and I do see them/talk to them in real life (ie... work..) but I don't necessarily need to read what they're doing every waking moment.
Hmm... lots to think about. And for the next 7 days.... lots of time to blog about it!
but you definitely get alot of comment action on FB :)
ReplyDeletejust hide the people you can't unfriend but don't need to hear about in your feed. works like a charm! :) although i find myself struggling over if i should hide my sister's best friend's cousin or not... but then i tell myself i can 'unhide' them later if i really wonder what they're up to. not surprisingly, i never miss them. and it saves me the time of reading through all those status updates. :)
ReplyDeleteI hear ya on the FB thing - I would delete mine all together if not for photography.
ReplyDeleteYay!!! You're really doing it!!! So far so good and I am totally finding I want to blog instead. :-)))). Next Friday.... We can have a ceremony and all get back on together. Hahahaha!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I read this, I thought of a friend, who had written about doing same idea. She's Mormon & was attending a weekly 'Women's Meeting' when the topic of technology dependence & the family came up.
ReplyDeleteLong story short...even though she has 3 children under the age of 4 that love 24hr kids' channels, she made the decision to cancel Cable & takes what she calls a 'Facebook Sabbat' from Friday afternoon until Monday mornings. She seems to be fine with it so far!!
