TFT: Talking to yourself

This whole TFT stems from me driving home from work and passing a guy walking down the road talking. He was alone. At first it crossed my mind that he was talking to himself, but then I thought, ehh.. maybe has one of those little hands free phones. That was originally going to be my TFT.... when you see people who are alone, but are talking to no apparent other person, do you automatically think "oh haha! They're talking to them self!" or do you give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe they have a hands free phone or something.

Anyhow, my TFT took a little spin after I was talking to Ryan about my possible topic and mentioned that I talk to myself all the time in the car. Mostly when I'm driving alone- to work etc, but I talk to myself. Sometimes its a conversation I've had with someone else, or a conversation I plan to talk to someone about. Or sometimes I'm just running ideas out loud or whatnot.

Ryan dead stares at me and says "That's not normal."

Really? Am I weird that I talk to myself in the car? That I carry on one sided conversations with myself? I'm getting nervous... please tell me I'm not the only one who does this. Does anyone else do this?

Other TFT'ers:

Kristi on retirement funds
Jessica on vacations
Jenny on high school reunions

  1. I'm so rarely in the car by myself, I don't know what I do! I think I just sing along to the music on the radio....loud! Otherwise, Ayla is always in the car with me, so I'm usually talking to her.

Do you talk to yourself other places too? :)

  2. Oh my gosh, I talk to myself all the time. All. The. Time. It's better now actually since I've had kids and I'm not really alone all that often and if I'm talking outloud I can pass it off as talking "to the kids"... but driving is probably the worst. People probably think I'm crazy.

  3. too funny. um, i talk and sing when i'm alone in the car. if i'm taking, i'm usually YELLING at another driver or saying something under my breath about how stupid people drive. i'm always singing. i carpool so i only do all this when i'm solo. is it weird that i actually look forward to those solo times? :)

  4. Whew. I'm glad I'm not the only one who talks to them self.

Andrea... sometimes at home I'll mumble things to myself but actual "talking" as in, talking out things, plans, etc I do in the car only. I think I'm weird.

  5. if you're odd... then so am i... and so is my kid. he will talk nonstop about anything. he's eight. i not only talk to myself, i talk to other people - like "dude, the light's changed. get off your phone and let's go" - or "lady, can't you see i have the rigth of way?" now, if i'm at home, i will also talk to myself, but less frequently. maybe i'll ask myself where did i put the cordless phone. or what are we having for dinner?

  6. Guess it is my way of using up my 100,001 words a day. I sing, make verbal 'mental notes', comment @ other drivers, etc., when I drive. It is probably worse when I am home :)

  7. I had to comment because I totally do this. Like you, I recap a previous conversation or prepare for a future conversation. It really helps to talk it out, even if it is alone!
